Bulgarians of the world, help me!

I am doing a project, and I need to know something about the naming customs in Bulgaria. Could Dima/Kolya/Vanya be diminutives for Dimitar/Nikolai/Ivan like in Russia, or are these feminine names in Bulgaria? Is it possible for Bulgarian males to take these names instead of Dimo/Kolyo/Vanyo?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me here. I'll really appreciate anything you can tell me about diminutives in Bulgaria :)
