Por e para
I still get a little confused about when to use "por" and when to use "para." Is there a rule I can use to remember which one I need?
eg
"Can you do something for me?" = "Pode fazer uma coisa pra mim?" (?)
"This is a present for my mother." = "Isto è um presente por minha mãe." (?)
In English it's the same word, so this is really a source of confusion for me...

POR: preposition that indicates 1) Cause, reason; 2) environment; 3) The place that something or someone crosses.
PARA: preposition that indicates 1) direction; 2) purpose.
Sometimes you can use both, sometimes you can't. In your examples you can use:
"Can you do something for me?" = "Pode fazer uma coisa PARA mim?" or "Pode fazer uma coisa POR mim?;
"This is a present for my mother." = "Isto è um presente PARA minha mãe."
PARA: preposition that indicates 1) direction; 2) purpose.

"Pode fazer uma coisa POR/PARA mim?" < you can use both
"Isto é um presente PARA minha mãe" < the present is for someone, use PARA"
"Isto é um presente PARA minha mãe" < the present is for someone, use PARA"
