In "voy a la piscina" a means destination. And is used like union between verb and verb's objective.

Espero me entiendas, no haablo bien el inglés.

The meaning of the 'a' in this sentence is like the meaning of 'to' in english, if you say in spanish "voy a la piscina" is the same to say "I go to the pool" so the meaning of 'a' in spanish sentence is the same of 'to' in the english sentence. Just to finish it's a destination preposition as youali said
