Sobre a direção
As I have learnt the usage and distinction of "in the derection(east, west or so on) of" and "to the derection(east, west or so on) of" in English. But it seems that both expression in portuguese is translated into "ao leste/oeste de".I just wonder how you distinguish these two situations such as below,
Beijing is in the north of China.
Russia is to the north of China.
As common sense, we can easily understand the difference between the two sentences above. But what if a strange and never-heard location and place? How can you tell the difference?

Pequim fica no norte da China.
Rússia fica ao norte da China.
Not too different than in English:
no/na = em (in) + o/a (the)
ao/à = a (to) + o/a (the)
