How do I use the article את in a sentence?

Sometimes I see it in a sentence like this one: אני מנסה לשפר את העברית שלי.
I dont understand the purpose for it being there.

Hi, that's what I wrote you in your other question. (ani ohevet et hamusika, remember?)
It is no article, it marks the object. But you use it only with determined nouns (nouns which have an article).
אני כותב את המכתב : I write the letter.
אני כותב מכתב: I write a letter.

So, every noun which is a direct object, if it is accompagnied by "ha" ,needs the את.
It only shows you "hey I am a specific direct object". You don't translate it, because you can't translate it. :)

And in your sentence, Ivrit is the object. :)
