Saying goodbye in a movie phonecall

Maybe it's a silly question... or maybe not.
Why american series characters don't say goodbye when they end a phonecall?
I wonder if this is common, or only happen in the movies.
Is it not very unpolite?

It's a movie thing, and yes we find it very funny once we think about it! :)
