I know that you add 了 to a verb in order to make it a past completed action, but what about the future tense?

Your question is a bit complex. Technically speaking verbs don't have tenses in Chinese. Generally, we add temoral adverbial or words like 会、将、要 to express a future tense.

    add 要 which means will
我要去学校 means I will go to school
