Actually, if you can read it or say it, you have its meaning. You see, if you ask the Japanese, or the Chinese for that matter, about the actual meaning of a Kanji you will draw a series of blank faces. They are generally never asked this kind of thing. If they know the word then they know the meaning.
If you really need to know the full meaning of a certain Kanji then your best resource is a Kanji dictionary.

(I think this is more like "What meaning(s) does this kanji have?")
When I was asked "この漢字は何と読むんですか?"(=How do you read this kanji?), I'd tell you how to read/pronounce it, not its meaning(s).
For example...
「購」in 「購読」(subsribe)
A: (pointing the kanji 購,) この漢字は、何と読むんですか？
B: 「こう」と読みます。
A: どんな意味ですか？(or どういう意味ですか？/ 意味は何ですか？)
B: 「買う」、「買い求める」、buy、または、purchase という意味です。
