There was a small village...
I am writing an informal letter to a 'pen-pal' for homeworkI have to say I was in the south of France with friends and a few other bullet points. I'm just stuck on one of these bullet points:
•Refer to an interesting village you visited.
I wanted to start off by saying 'There was a small village near where we were staying. My friends and I decided to go to this village for a day trip. The village was full of old buildings and many other interesting things.'
I wasn't sure if I should start off by saying 'Il y avait' or 'Il y a' because of course the village is still there but it sounds better to say 'there was'. Thanks in advance for any help.

We say : il y avait, 'cause you're talking about something happend in the past.
As the letter is informal, you can translate it like this : Le village était plein de vieux bâtiments et de beaucoup d'autres trucs (stuff) intéressants.

We say : (il) y avait, 'cause you're talking about something happened in the past.
