汉字大概分为五种：
1、象形字。
比如人、口、日、月、木、山、火……。They Come from the shape of real stuff.
2.会意字。
(1)比如从、比、林、品,you can understand the meaning of the character by the meaning of it's part.Like林，two tree just woods.
(2)休、旦、男、鸣。like休，a man leans against a tree,just rest.
3.形声字：姐、妈、河、梅。You can see the meaning from one part ,and see the pronunciation from another part.
4.指事字：刃、本、末、凶。
like刃，means knife blade,刀means knife.and a point is just the blade,the blade is abstract.
5.假借字（通假字），only a little.

Yes, Chinese characters are hard to write to non-native speakers.
I think before you learn how to write Chinese characters, you need to know 笔画（ the basic ways we scratch to form characters）. They are 横（一）、竖（丨）、撇（丿）、点（丶）、捺(It is hard to write here on computer , think it as the right part of 人 )、折（乛）and so on.
Then you need to know the direction or sequence we scratch a character. We write from the top to the bottom, from the left to the right. That is to say , we scratch the top left first and end in bottom right.
After that you must learn to write easier characters at the very beginning, which are usually used as 偏旁部首 （parts of a harder character）like 人（human)， 口(mouth) ，火(fire)， 土(soil) ， 金(metal) etc . The characters that can work also as 偏旁部首 can either keep the same or have some slight transformatins when they are used as a part of a hard character. Once you see the characters have got a certain 偏旁部首， usually this character might be related to this 偏旁部首。 e.g. 日 means the sun in chinese. When 日 used as 偏旁部首， it remains the same, like in 晖 （the sun's lights), 照 （to light), 时 （time or when). 足 （foot) will be changed when used as a 偏旁部首，such as in 踢 （kick) 跑 （run) .
手 （hand) will be as the left parts in 抬 （lift) and 摸 （feel or touch).
At last , you have to work hard to compare, find then finally remember how and why we form the characters like that.
