when we never use "档" like this, usually, there are 2 words we prefer use, 档案 or 文档
文档=文件 in English means file; 档案 in English means archive or record. So when you want to use archive or record in Chinese, 档案 is your option; and when you want to use file in Chinese, 文档 or 文件 goes to you.
