Can ~고 be dropped in the ~는다고 하다 (quoting) construction ?

In some Korean sentences I read, in what seems to be quotations, "~고" is missing. Here is an example :
"어쩐지 요즘 들어서 많이 달라졌다 했어"
"No wonder that when I listened these days I heard that you had changed a lot."
In general, when part of a construction can be dropped, my Korean textbook mentions it, but it doesn't talk about the possibility of dropping "고" in the ~는다고 하다 construction used to quote something. So I just wanted to make sure, in the sentence above, is "많이 달라졌다 했어" a quotation, equivalent to "많이 달라졌다고 했어" ?
Can you drop ~고 in a quotation in all contexts or is it reserved to some forms of speech, maybe a bit informal ?

Good wild guessing. When -고 is used to quote something, it can be dropped in all contexts. But note that -고 can be dropped ONLY when it is used to QUOTE st.

you can drop 고 in nearlly all cntexts not only the form of speech. but i think ~했다 했어 or ~했다고 했어 in that context both sound me like kinda informal.
