How do I use 而且

there's a form in english :not only but also , 而且=but also not only =不仅
so here comes 不仅......而且/还.......
而且 is used to connect two sentence
她不仅漂亮 而且/还 聪明
she's not only pretty but also smart

two meanings.
1) not only...but also... "but also" means 而且 "not only" means 不但
2) besides. look at another your question about 再说 you can replace 再说 by 而且 there:
再说/而且，我舅舅就住在那儿。

而且 is somewhat similar to"and",is used to connect two sentences. There is a phrase in English"not only ... but also...", but also means 而且.
