During preseason training, a college football lineman married one of the team's cheerleaders. The coach was a bit surprised and remarked to his star football player, "You are such a big, burley guy. Why in the world did you marry such a tiny, petite woman? She is no bigger than your hand." "That's right, Coach," replied the lineman. "But, she's much better!"

It should be 'burly' and it means big and strong.
At the end of the joke he says having a wife is better than using his hand ... think about it, you'll get the meaning...

I agree with the other person that posted the answer. I will go one step further just in case you still do not understand the joke. The coach makes the comparison of the size of the wife to his hand, and then the man replies "that's right" but better than using my hand to masturbate.
