How do you write contractions in Portuguese?
English words have contractions which are shortened forms of words. Some examples are don't for do not, can't for can not, wouldn't for would not, haven't for have not, you are for you're, and so on. So is 'não é' the same as 'is not' or isn't? And is 'não têm' the same as 'have not' or haven't? Would the same rule apply with the word 'não' and all contractions with the word 'not'?

There is some contractions like "dela"= de ela (from her), "dele"= de ele (from him), etc. But in the case of "não"it doesn't happen. And "não é"=ïs not = isn't, "não têm"could be = have not and haven't.
Example:
"Ela não é do Rio"= She's not from Rio = She is not from Rio = She isn't from Rio
"Ele não tem dinheiro"= He does not have money = He doesn't have money
verb: TER
Ele - tem (singular)
Eles - têm (plural)
Example:
"Ela não é do Rio"= She's not from Rio = She is not from Rio = She isn't from Rio
"Ele não tem dinheiro"= He does not have money = He doesn't have money
verb: TER
Ele - tem (singular)
Eles - têm (plural)
Hello Litebrite,
in portuguese is much easier to learn the word as it´s said, contractions are used in few situations, for instance: Olho d´água = Olho de água = Water eye, hardly you will need to use a lot of them.
Some contractions are wrote in a definitive way and you don´t need be worried about it, ex: De ele = dele, but the word dele is used always this way, because gives you idea of possession, ex: A casa é dele = the house is of him.
So, learn the word, in English there is much more contractions than in portuguese.
Best regards,
