What is the diference between 'a great many' and 'a great many of'?

A great many houses were knocked down by the earthquake.
A great many OF houses were knocked down by the earthquake.

Do you think both the two sentences are the same in meaning? Thank you.

    "great many" (a very large NUMBER of) vs. "great many of" (a very large PERCENTAGE of)

    However, we wouldn't say a "great many OF houses" since it is excessive for what you want to say.

    The first sentence is correct. The word 'of' is not necessary.

     

    A great many houses were knocked down by the earthquake.
    A great many OF houses were knocked down by the earthquake.

    You would say, " A lot of houses were knocked down by the earthquake. (a lot, meaning many)
