    Both are appropriate.

Situation 1--The man has just arrived.
Other person: Welcome! Will you stay here for three years?
The man: We never planned to stay here for three years. We came for three months! After three months, we will have to leave.

Situation 2--The man has been here for three months.
Other person: I don't want you to leave now. Will you stay for years?
The man: We never planned to stay here for three years. We came for three months! It is time to leave now.

The man could even say this after staying for three years.

Situation 3--The man has been here for three years.
