I heard this expression being used a lot in recent dramas I have been watching, esp. in Gokusen. So, even though both of these have the same meaning, what are the main differences between them? (もうしわけありません and ごめんなさい).
Is もうしわけありません used mostly towards higher ranking people? And, what is the correct way of writing that using Kanji?

Both もうしわけありません and ごめんなさい means "I'm sorry" in English.
As you are writing, もうしわけありません is more polite expression, so it is used towards higher ranking people. もうしわけありません using Kanji is 申し訳ありません.
You can say just ごめん to more close people.
