We didn't hear any grumbling / grumble about the food.
Use "We didn't hear any grumbling about the food"

She paid up, with some grumbling / grumble.
Use "She paid up with some grumbling" although you would probably change the word order to "Despite some grumbling she paid up".

My main grumble / grumbling is about the lack of privacy,
Use "My main grumble is about the lack of privacy" although it would be better to use "comp, aint" instead of "grumble".
