    It means "I promise". The full saying is "cross my heart and hope to die". This means that you promise it before God and he can kill you if you break the promise. This saying is used mostly by children.

     

    "cross my heart" here is the same as if the person had said, "I promise". It stems from a religious act of making the sign of the cross over one's heart. A blessing, a promise.

     

    It meant to give your heart to God. To tell the truth and nothing but the truth.

    When I was a kid, we said
