Prefix for 'pre'

How do you ask if something is pre-X in Arabic? I am not sure if it is a prefix like you add to words or if it just depends on the word? For example, how would I say "pre-law"? Or something like "pre-medical" etc.

    Hello,
Actually Arabic uses the prefix and the suffix in all of words and we use them to make other words from the verbs. In general, you have to make sure about something: Arabic has different rules to make some senses for English words, it's possible, but the inverse ( I meant making sense from Arabic to English, it's not always done well --- example : دين has no similar word in English, but it is near of the sense of "a religion").
For your question we add ما قبل [maa qabla] [مَا قَبْلَ] [it's not a suffix or prefix]
Let see these examples to understand more how to use:
ما قبل التاريخ [maa qabla a-taareekh] [pre-historic]
ما قبل البداية [maa qabla al-bidaayah] [pre-beginning]
    ما قبل الأخبار [ maa qabla al-akhbaar] [ pre-news]
ما قبل المرض [maa qabla al-marad] [pre-disease]
    Regard.
