    In a positive sentence, you use "des" because it's plural.

    In a negative sentence, you always use "de" (even if it's plural, feminine or otherwise). Here they used d' instead because if a word start with a vowel, clip the vowel of the article (de amis = wrong). It helps blending the words together. So remember, with "pas" it's always "de" or d'.

    Il a des amis= He has got friends.
    Il n'a pas d'amis= He hasn't got any friends.

    IL a des amis. = He has friends
    IL n'a pas d'amis = he hasn't any friends
