"잠" comes from the verb "자다"
(You can get some more at http://www.koreanwikiproject.com/wiki/index.php?title=%28%EC%9C%BC%29%E3%85%81 )

"들다" means "to go a place where you can sleep"

    자다(verb) ☞ 잠(noun) ☞ 잠+들다 ☞ 잠들다 = to fall asleep, as Mojave said above.^^'

    \^o^/

"잠자는 자다" not right setence. -> "남자는 잔다"
    "남자는 잔다" = 'sleep'
"남자는 잠들다" means 'asleep'. just now, falling in sleep
