The letter ь

How does the letter ь affect the pronunciation of different letters? I know л goes from a more English L to a more Spanish L.

In most cases the sound before ь becomes softer. So palatalization occures if the consonant is before ь. For example, мол (mol) - моль (mol'). Also if wovels like я, ю, е stay after ь, they pronounced like in initial position of the word ( юрист ю-[йу] = молью ю-[йу])
