Question about the location of the house

James Kennedy had read some pieces I’d written about our sufferings for Slate, the online magazine, and wanted to give us (“no conditions attached”) a new house across the lake FROM New Orleans.

I have checked a map of Louisana. There is a lake near New Orleans. What am I wondering to know is that the house locates in the opposite of New Orleans? Thank you.

"Across the lake from New Orleans" would mean "on the opposite side of the lake as New Orleans."

You could also say the house is on the other side of the lake.
