How to use the verbs stems?

For example:
この体内時計のおかげで、1日の生活のリズムができ、夜になると眠くなり、朝が来ると目覚めるというわけです。

でき and なり are stems, so when should I use the stems?
Explain with examples, please.

    Masu-stems are often used instead of て形 to connect sentences in written Japanese. It sounds more formal this way. In spoken language you would say リズムができて、夜になると眠くなって.
