Rank is about the order of importance or authority. A company president has more authority than a manager, who has more authority than a secretary. Rank can also be for a hierarchy of competition. In a tournament, the teams are ranked from 1st place to last place.

Sequence is any other order, especially a chronological, alphabetical, or numerical order. This includes steps in a process, which are ordered chronologically. For example, to bake a cake, the first step is to gather the ingredients. The next step is to mix the ingredients together. The third step is to put the mixture into a baking dish. The last step is to put it into the oven. Step number three cannot come before step number one. This is a sequence of steps to follow.
