महात्मा - is formed by the union of two words " महत् " and " आत्मन् " (a portmanteau) .
" महत् " means " solemn " or " divine " and " आत्मन् " means " soul " .
" महात्मा " means " a divine soul ".
महात्मा/mahatma word is also used for Jesus , Buddha as in Mahatma Buddha , Mahatma Jesus in Hindi .

literal meaning of mahatma is great soul
it is mostly used for saints
for example Mahatma Gandhi although he was a leader, he is called mahatma because of his great character sticks, for his behavior of a saint.and for his principals.
like he used to live a simple life.
*he used to have a simple watch,specs, a spinning wheel (charkha) and some necessary things like books, pens etc. these were the only accessories he had.
*he started to wear a shot dhoti after knowing the fact that many of indians had no clothes to wear.
*he requested to people to fast 2 days in week thus no one left hungry .
* He insisted that the struggle against the British should be done through nonviolent methods.
*He went on hunger strikes as necessary to protest British rule
*He was a great orator
*geart will power and tolerance
*his noble deeds for the humanity
