First off, I would say I am trying to be, not I try to be. Secondly, if you say 'fluent', you probably mean in speaking the language, not in understanding the language when it is spoken to you.
So I would suggest something like: I'm trying to improve my knowledge of English / my listening skills in English ...
As for the second part of the sentence, I would say that it is not wrong, but perhaps you might like to consider:
if you speak slowly, I [can] understand.
If you speak slowly, I can get the gist of what you are saying.

I'm trying to be fluent.... because you're saying it to someone who's talking to you or listening to you at the moment. What I mean is that it's not true all the time, is it? It's only true at the moment that you talked/talk to someone.
Anyway, how's it going Didier?
