    Both of them. Ex:
Há muita gente aqui - Há muitas pessoas aqui.

    Gente is a singular word.
    Pessoas is a plural word.

The word MUITA can work as an adverb or as a pronoum.
In this case it works as a pronoum.

Muito / singular - muitos / plural - in general with words that are masculine
Muita / singular - muitas / plural - feminine words

    Masculine words - garoto - boy / homem - man / Sofá - sofa / Carro - car /
    Feminine words - garota - girl / mulher - woman / cadeira - chair / árvore - tree.

Muitos homens gostam de carro - Most men like cars.
    Muito homem gosta de carro-

Eu não consigo escolher, há muitos sofás aqui - I can´t get choose, there are so many sofas in here.

Muitas garotas gostam de batom - Most girls like lipstick
Muita garota gosta de batom -

Ele quebrou muitas cadeiras ontem - He broke many chairs yesterday.

I did my best in order to explain.

    Best Regards,

it´s more usual to write --> pessoas

Both of them express the same thing. The difference between "pessoas" and "gente" is that "pessoas" is used in the plural and "gente" is used in the sigular. For example:

"Existem muitas pessoas comemorando o Carnaval."
"Existe Muita gente comemorando o Carnaval."

There are a lot of people celebrating carnival.
