I just looked up the most common 사자성어 and there were about seven of them that I have heard repeatedly.

They are NOT used often, but it comes in handy if you know at least the most common ones. You will encounter them in Korean dramas, on the radio, in poems, etc.

Here is my top 3 list:

    1. 군계일학 (君鷄 一鶴: a group of chicken, one crane) - This is used to describe an exceptional person who stands out from the crowd.

    2. 새옹지마 (塞翁之馬: words of an old man who lives close to the border) - An unfortunate event or thing can turn out be a blessing in disguise.

A friend who used to ride a horse with) - A childhood friend. An old friend.

    Hope this helps.

함흥차사 (咸興差使) is a good one, too (Thanks, Pascal). This is used when a person goes somewhere, and you don't hear from them ("No news.")
