Moving to South Korea because of... Kpop?!

I tried asking this somewhere else, but for some reason the site doesn't work on my computer and I really wanted some people's opinions, so I decided to visit ask it here if it's okay.. ._.

So about four or so years ago I got into kpop. I started learning the language, and became to really like it. I decided that I think I want to major in the Korean language in college. I'm not saying I definitely want to move there, I mean, who knows, I could end up not liking Korea. I could also end up changing my mind about the major, but as of right now this is what I think I'd like.

I don't just listen to kpop. I also listen to American music, French & Spanish music, Jpop, Cpop and some Thai music. Also, more than I like listening to kpop and watching dramas, I really like listening to people talk in Korean. I think it sounds really cool listening to casual conversation.

Also, I think I've always had some sort of language obsession. I remember when I was in preschool my friends somehow learned some simple Spanish phrases such as "hola", "como estas", and numbers one through ten. They taught them to me and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. When I was in about.. maybe.. third or fourth grade (?), my parents bought a "Spanish for dumbies" and a Spanish dictionary so I could learn some Spanish on my own haha. In the fifth grade, I took some Italian classes at school for a few weeks before I switched schools. The new school didn't start languages until eighth grade, but there was a "Spanish Club" (which was really just like a week or two of learning simple Spanish phrases) that I joined. I even had a folder for language information (which has now become my Korean folder). I had taps for Spanish, French, Japanese and German in that folder.

Then at the beginning of my eighth grade year I moved again. And, of course, this school didn't start languages until nineth grade. At the end of that year I got into kpop, and after moving back to my previous school, I started learning Korean on my own. My nineth grade year I finally got to take and finish a language class and I ended up taking French. Around that time I found a Korean school not too far, but still not close, to where I lived and started going there on Sundays.

I still take French and Korean, and I plan on finally full-filling my lifelong dream and I signed up to take Spanish 2 next year at school :D

I'd like to learn a bunch of languages and travel (although I doubt since it'll be extremely expensive). I don't want to just learn Korean, but it is the one that interests me the most so far.

Anyways, my whole point in telling you all this information was to ask if it's weird that I decided I wanted to go to South Korea and major in Korean when it started with kpop? I'm not obsessed (I don't think at least) with it. And I don't want to go to Korea in hopes that I will meet a famous person or in hopes of signing a contract or anything like that. I can't sing or dance to save my life. XD

I asked a guy who moved to Korea (I don't know him personally, by the way.) and he said that people will probably think I'm weird. I still go to the Korean schools on the weekends and people don't seem to think I'm weird.. At least not to my face :/
If anything they seem to be intrigued my me and some people even said they thought it was cool.

What do you guys think? Do you think it's just a weird obsession or do you think it's interesting?

I read your story and to learn some foreign languages are very good for your knowledge and experiences. It seems like you fell in love with some Korean culture. First of all, I am Korean and I also like my nation's culture like TV shows and musics..Young girl can be addicted with some exotic pops and it is not weird at all, however, even we korean think it's weird when an adult(even he or she is Korean!) fell in love too much about TV shows n Kpops. For example.. sweet teenagers can be falling in love with bieber's music, but a big maniac adult fan of bieber looks little weird, huh? So, it is not weird at all now, just enjoy them :) maybe you will be able to use your knowledge someday on business or your future work!
