Is this sentence correct?

( I'd been employed ) at TRI Inc as an assistant engineer for 3 years before- entering the military.

in the brackets, Should I use past sense or past perfect sense?

    I think that you have written a very good sentence.

    I would just make a few changes:

    I had been at TRI, Inc., as an assistant engineer for three years before entering the military.

    NOTES:

    a. Probably it is a good idea NOT to use contractions in formal writing.
    b. Some people think that you should spell out numbers that are smaller than ten.
    c. There is no need for a hyphen after "before."

    You would use the past tense. In this case, I would change "I had been employed" to "I was employed". In another answer they placed a comma between "Inc." and "as". This is not necessary for this sentence. If you use a comma there, you would also use another comma after "engineer".

    1) I was employed at TRI, Inc. as an assistant engineer for three years...
    2) I was employed at TRI, Inc., as an assistant engineer, for three years...

    Both are correct, but the first uses "open punctuation" and the second uses "closed punctuation".
