Can you tell me the meaning of a phrase?

"At the University of Wyoming, scientists modified a group of silkworms to produce silk that is, weight for weight, stronger than steel".
Would you please tell me about the phrase "weight for weight", I think it cannot be found in a dictionary.
thanks

"at an equal weight of each." The silk has more strength per gram than the steel. 3 grams of the silk is stronger than 3 grams of steel.
