    From a question - WHY?
If you don't have a really serious reason, give it a break, for any language requires years before you will ever start to have a conversation, if ever at all.
When you already convinced yourself I suggest 2 apps for your smartphone.
    1. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.legendarya.katakana&hl=en
    2. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.legendarya.helloandroid&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEwMiwiY29tLmxlZ2VuZGFyeWEuaGVsbG9hbmRyb2lkIl0.
There are also available tools online.

Then try to read random symbols, without telling them out loud them. If you are confident enough, you need to find a teacher; friend to guide you into spoken language.

Start by learning the basic things (introducing yourself, simple numbering, colors, days of week, etc). Then you can scale to higher things.
Also start by learning hiragana first, so when you read vocabulary you can train this alphabet at the same time. Then you can go for katakana.

I agree with Matsu. Make some Japanese friends. I met some Japanese exchange students from the Tokyo area on the bus last week. They were visiting California to do some sightseeing and to study English. It motivated me to start studying Japanese again.
