These translations fit with your examples.

"la prochaine fois je m'y prendrai bien avant/bien plus tôt"
"Next time, I'll set about it well in advance"

"Tu t'y prends mal, je ne m'y prendrais pas comme ça"
"You are going about it the wrong way, I wouldn't do it like that"

I often hear it used as follows:

"Je ne sais pas comment m'y prendre"
"I don't know how to go about it / set about doing it / tackle it", etc...

You can say " Il s'y prend bien pour travailler" or " Je m'y prend plu tôt d'habitude" I don't know, there are many example; Do you known what it mens this verb in first time?

"S'y prendre" means having addresse to do something. It means that we use somes good or bad ways to succeed what we are doing. Like "Je m'y prends mal" (I do it wrong) it's the way you're doing this. And in "Je veux m'y prendre bien à l'avance" it's the person wants to do it right, like doing this long time before her birthday. So at last "se prendre à faire quelque chose" means you put more or less address in your action :) I don't know if you understood ? Because french use it often, but even for use it's haard to understand what it really means XD
