Murph and I got up to our eight-man room on the third floor of the battalion barracks and I closed the door. Everyone else was milling around base on an evening pass. We were alone.

An evening pass would permit a soldier to enjoy leisure activities on the base or exit the base for the evening, perhaps until midnight.
