    "To mess around with (somebody)" can have two possible meanings:

    - you have fun with them together (joking and laughing with them)
    - you have fun at their expense (ie. you torment them)

    So in your example, it really depends on whether the bookworms are your friends or not.

    A bookworm is someone who loves reading books.
    I interpret your sentence as the people playing with people who are bookworms, but as Peachy said, it could mean more than one thing.
