Ещё хочу добавить про артикли. После "está" (están) используется всегда определённый артикль, так как речь идёт о расположении конкретного предмета. В то же время после "hay" будет или неопределённый артикль (ед.ч.), или вообще отсутствие артикля (мн.ч.).
    - En mi habitación hay una mesa grande y 4 sillas. La mesa está cerca de la ventana. Las sillas están al lado.

    Let's see,
"hay" is impersonal, it corresponds, in general, to "there is" "there are":
Hay un niño en el parque: There is a boy in the park
Hay cervezas en la nevera: There are some beers in the fridge.

On the other hand, "está" is the third person of the indicative present of the verb ESTAR, which corresponds to the verb "to be (is)" in some contexts, for example:
Present continuous: he's eating: está comiendo
Location: Madrid is in Spain; Madrid está en España
Mood: He's sad, happy, tired; Está triste, contento, cansado.

Don't forget that in spanish we have two verbs which correspond to the english "to be": ser and estar.
He's a doctor; Es médico...but this is another question:)
