You can have a mathematical problem that troubles you but there is no such a thing like "a mathematical trouble" that "problems" you.

Trouble is more general, we could say more natural and independent of your actions.
Problem is something to solve. How to go out of troubles, this is a problem.

A nail in a chair troubles you. How to find a solution to this problem is a way out from this situation.

A problem is something that requires a solution. It can be a math problem, a social program (crime, poverty), or a communication problem (not understanding each other, personality differences).

Trouble can be used in the same manner as problem, but it does not always require a solution. The best definition I found is: "difficulty or problems. failure to function properly."

"The failure to function properly" would be the difference between the two. You have troubles, because something in your life is not turning out or functioning as you want it to.

The last difference. "Problem" can only be used as a noun, where as "trouble" can be a noun, verb or adjective. Examples. Noun "You are in trouble." Verb "my girlfriend is troubling me." Adjective "My troubling neighbor will not leave me alone."
