"I can't" and "I could not"

How do you use the negative form of "can" in Turkish?

For example, I want to say "I could not stand up" (past tense), and "I can't do more than this".

Additional Details:

do I just add "ama" after the verb root, and then the present or past participle ending?

eg. gitmek
gidemedim - I could not go
gidemem - I can not go

eg. yemek
yiyemedim - I could not eat
yiyemem - I can not eat
