Usage of -(으)로 in 친구를 만나러 여기로 왔어

I know there are a lot of uses of the particle -(으)로 to mean tool/method/material something is done with/made out of and also for direction. But what does it mean with 여기 in this sentence?

친구를 만나러 여기로 왔어 = I came (in the direction of?) here to meet a friend

Is the particle necessary?

Not necessary, but here '로' in "여기로" is used to emphasize "direction".
You can also say "만나러 여기[에]" to put emphasis on "destination".

...만나러 여기 왔어요. (just a spot, 여기)
= ...만나러 여기로 왔어요. (in the direction of 여기)
= ...만나러 여기에 왔어요. (to 여기)

    여기[로] ☞ direction
    여기[에] ☞ destination
    여기[에서] ☞ departure
여기[까지] ☞ distance or range, (from A)...to 여기
