    Actually, you can use both at the same time. An "assignment" is a task, and "homework" is work that you have to do at home, usually related to school. If you have homework to do, this might include several tasks, like reading a textbook chapter, writing an essay, etc. A "homework assignment" is a specific task that the teacher asks you to do at home (or the library, etc.), and usually requires that you hand it in at the next class or maybe later to have it corrected.
