"John Baker, year 9" - age or the form at school?

I've come across a sample film review in an English textbook, signed "John baker, year 9". I'm wondering if 9 refers to the author's age of maybe the form (grade) he goes to at school or something completely different.

It is about a school and depends on country:

It is most likely school. In the US we would use Grade 9 or 9th Grade. However it's not age. For age we just use a number "John Baker, 9" or "John Baker, age 9."
