What's the meaning of "on the line" here?

I listened to the crack of rifles on the line. Saw branches lift and shake off snow when birds took flight, startled at the sound.
What's the meaning of "on the line" here?
Thanks!

Because the paragraph speaks of the "crack of rifles," I will assume that the context is that of a military action. In that context, a "line" is an extended formation of troops (soldiers) facing the the enemy. (The "line" of soldiers does not have to be straight). So the rifle shots originated somewhere "on the line", that is, somewhere among the troops who were facing the enemy.
