russian fiction books are too difficult for basic level of russian language. U may read fairytales- its easy, like this "Незнайка в Солнечном городе" Николай Носов, "Денискины рассказы" Драгунский, русские народные сказки, "Винни-пух" в переводе Заходера, seems to be OK and funny. Books for adults Дарья Донцова- very easy detective books or "Приключения Шерлока Холмса"

I can't say that there are the grammar basics in the Russian language, but first of all I can advise you to practice with the words order and the forms of nouns and verbs (that depend on gender, declension and so on)
And about books...I don't want to advise you classic literature. The Russian speech has changed a lot for these years. Just read modern literature: detectives, fantasy...whatever you like. Most of books are translated into Russian, so It seems me you won't have problems with lack of reading.

My husband learned russian from scratch using the book "Поехали русский язык для взрослых" by Чернышев.
I've got this book (and some other books). If you can't find it i can share.
