There are thousands and thousands of nouns in Spanish and they're all either in the masculine or the feminine so you can't just memorize them all. There are general rules you can learn but you have to know the exceptions as well. Here are the basics:
    - Most nouns that end in -o are masculine.
    - Most nouns that end in -a are feminine.
    - Most nouns that end in -e, in -ma, in an accented vowel and in a consonant (except -d, -z and ión) are masculine.
    - Most nouns that end in -d, -z and ión are feminine.

But as I said, there are exceptions and you must learn them (Google is your friend). I wouldn't necessarily suggest to learn them by heart, but at least take note of them and try to remember the next time you come across or use that word in a conversation or a text.

    Some common exceptions:
    - el día
    - la foto, la moto, la mano
    - la frase, la gente, la carne, la tarde
