Why последние rather than последний

"последние 3 год Я ........."
I saw the sentence in my testbook and I guess it means
"in the last 3 years I........" but why последние rather than последний?

There is a little mistake in your book. The right is "Последние 3 года Я". We have in russian plural form in all parts of spech - in vebs,adjectives, noun. In this sentence you can see numeral "3" before noun "год". This mean you have to use plural form of noun - "года". That's why you need to use plural form of adjective - "последние".
