There is a subtle difference between need and lack. A need might be perceived, but not absolute. A lack might be a deficiency or shortcoming.
As Randy said the difference is quite subtle.I,myself have some hard time with it.I'll try to give an example and I'll be happy to hear others on what they think :).Here is the example :
There is nothing i need. - It is like you are happy with what you already have or what you have is enough and not less,not more.
There is nothing i lack. - It's more like you don't miss something.
Also:
I don't lack X skill. - It's like - I have X skill.
I don't need X skill. - X skill is not gonna be any helpful to you,so you don't need it.
