1. Use the perfekt for events in the past.
2. At the beginning stages of learning German it is best to avoid using the Praeteritum. Just use the Perfekt in order to make it a habit.
3. The Praeteritum has a few uses, amongst which are:
a) Past continuous - events that were still happening at the point of time in question
b) Narrative mood - used when telling stories. In fact, whenever you read a novel or fiction, you will see the Praeteritum used over and over again.
4. Don't get your head bogged down with this stuff too much. As I said before, discipline yourself to use the perfekt tense until it becomes second nature.
